We've just come back from UK after a week visiting relatives.
I has forebodings as soon as I saw we were returning via T5 on its opening day, and true to form it was a nightmare. I don't want to go to London, I use it as a hub for Edinburgh and Manchester. Our flight from Edinburgh was cancelled, so we missed our connection, finished up in a hotel in Windsor, came home om a Cathay flight next day, which left on time, and arrived home 13 hours late but with our luggage (which appears to be better than most people. They can keep their fancy terminal which looks like a diminutive copy of our airport anyway. Next time we visit UK we will try to hub in Europe, and not go anywhere near London.
We have just arrived home after a fantastic holiday in South Africa, to discover the wonderful guy who took us up the Sani Pass into Lesotho was shot dead in a burglary on January 2nd. We had such hopes for SA, things really seemed to be on the up and up, we were talking about retiring there, our daughter going to college there, and now this graphic illustration that things are still very, very wrong in the state of South Africa

Chambodia has made some wondeful Amelia Peabody icons, she has put them up at valleyofkings
To compensate for the very stressful day I am having at work, the good news is that Mistful (Maya) (http://mistful.livejournal.com) is going to be published in the real world. I don't know how to make her lj name link, but it doesn't matter. This is such good news!

Just returned from the Tienanmen anniversary vigil - 18 years and still no acknowledgment from the Chinese Government that mistakes were made. Fifty Five Thousand people lit a candle here in Hong Kong tonight to remember those who died when the tanks fired on the students. It was very hot and I was dripping in sweat, and I didn't understand the speeches 'cos they were in Cantonese or Putonghua, but that didn't matter 'cos we were all there to be counted.
well Happy New Year to all.
This is the first day for a week that I have been able to access websites from outside Hong Kong (except oddly enough BBC) thanks to the earthquake off Tai Wan on Boxing Day, which damaged undersea cables. China, Korea, Singapore,Tai Wan and here in HK were all affected. Emails and internet have been frustratingly slow or unavailable.
There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth throughout the land as no-one could work or play on the internet. Just shows how dependent we all are now. It is still not perfect but at least I can log on now. Up to last night I could not get onto LJ or Yahoo or any .com site.
It will take up to 2 weeks to fix the cables, how steam age is that?

And a great start to the year, walking the dog at 00.20 on January 1 she found a Chinese Porcupine, my first sighting ever, despite living here for 16 years. Hope it is a good omen
Well, first ever post. I signed up so that I could read some of my favourite LJ authors who, understandably, wanted an idea of who was reading their LJ.

To prove I am a real person:

I've been lurking around LJ for a year or so, but am rather cautious about posting much in the way of detail about me. As one of the older generation (I can remember seeing the original Star Trek on first runs on UK TV, and getting distraught in the Miners' Strike era when the power cuts kicked in at 8.00pm and I missed the last ten minutes of every episode)I have a paranoia about my life being on public view.

I have been reading fanfic for 3 years or so, Startrek first, then Starsky and Hutch, now Harry Potter. Along the way I discovered slash and a whole new world opened up for me.

I cannot type for toffee, so thank God for spellcheckers.
(but I can't get this one to work so manually checked, how pathetic)

Next time I will learn how to edit a cut
